Early Education

When I look back on elementary and grade school, I remember liking school very much. It never occurred to me back then that I was extremely lucky in the education and opportunities that I received. I was born in Ocean Township, New Jersey and moved down to Long Beach Island, New Jersey when I was in 2nd grade, which is a little over an hour away. I loved school and my friends in Ocean Township, but I adjusted easily to my new home and school. I made a great group of friends, most of whom I am still very close with today. I loved my first teacher at my new school, whose name is Ms. Albanese. She was extremely caring and knew how to make second graders pay attention, which is no easy task.
After second grade, I attended Long Beach Island Grade School, which is where I attended grades 3 – 6. I had great teachers here as well, and continued to enjoy school very much. In fourth grade I had my favorite teacher, whose name is Ms. Hanson. She was an amazing teacher, who was very focused and a little on the strict side, but knew how to reward us for good behavior. She used to tell us stories that were hysterical; we often wanted her to tell us these stories instead of another kind of reward! I struggled with math a bit in fourth grade, and I remember Mr. Hansen would give me as much extra practice as possible. Also, in my school, it was a tradition for the 4th graders to create volcanoes and put them on display in the hallway for about a week. Of course, everyone was very excited about this, and I think that the whole school watched us make them “erupt” – by mixing vinegar and baking soda. My dad helped me make mine and I remember having a lot of fun doing this with him. I still had the same core group of friends, and in fourth and fifth grade I met two more of my good friends.
When I was four years old, my mom enrolled me in dance classes, which I continued in grade school. By the time I was in fourth grade, I went to dance class about 3 or 4 times a week. I spent a lot of time dancing in elementary school and always enjoyed it. This allowed me to make new friends because there were a bunch of girls from different towns that went to my dance studio. I now realize how lucky I was to be able to do something that I loved like this a lot. My mom always took me to my dance lessons, which was a huge sacrifice for her. It was an hour round trip to the studio and then probably at least an hour and a half for each class. It’s hard to believe that she did all this for me, and I don’t think I could have asked for a better childhood.
